Lil Hirdes is a devoted volunteer at Camp Kawartha, and we sat down with her recently to ask her why she chose to invest her spare time here and what her experience has been.
CK: Why did you select Camp Kawartha as a place to volunteer?
Lil: I started to volunteer at Camp Kawartha in 2004 as a summer camp nurse and I joined the Board of Directors about 3 years ago. Originally, I was looking for something a little different to do in terms of volunteering, and it was an opportunity for my daughter to experience summer day camp.
CK: Describe your volunteer role, and what you have learned by being a volunteer at the Camp.
Lil: I have returned as one of the Summer Camp nurses every year since then, even though my daughter has completed her time at CK (eventually working as a counselor for a summer). I am also a Board Member and I’ve learned so much about how decisions are made and how important it is to have someone at the helm of an organization who has a clear vision for both today and into the future.
CK: What do you enjoy most about being part of the Camp Kawartha Team?
Lil: The atmosphere is positive and inclusive; there is an emphasis on safety and respect; respect for self, others and nature. CKs leadership over the years has shown me that organizations can be great to their staff and their visitors, while also being good community citizens. I think the thing I have enjoyed the most about my involvement with CK over the years is learning what a progressive organization it is (with accessibility features, planning to be a ‘Sustainability’ icon and so forth) while still maintaining the feel of a small, children’s outdoor camp.
Camp Kawartha appreciates the passion and hard work of its many volunteers.
