Nature Notes: Benefits of Indoor Plants

Back in November, someone saved the Boston Ivy that was inadvertently left outside. Although it had snow on it and many of the leaves were brown, that plant was hearty enough to make a strong comeback and it now sits pleasantly on one of our windowsills in the office, looking green and healthy once more.
It got us thinking about the many benefits indoor plants can offer, either in a warm summer or a cold winter. Looking into some scientific journals here is what we found:
  1. They can help improve mental and physical health. Studies show that just looking at greenery in your home or office can help by providing a sense of peace and act as a calming influence. When you feel less stressed, your immune system gets a natural boost!
  2. They improve air quality. Plants release oxygen and take up carbon dioxide. More oxygen means your body works more effectively, you brain is less fatigued, and connections are improved
  3. Your productivity is improved! (The boss liked this one!) A space with plants creates a positive atmosphere providing colour and personalization. This mental boost can improve productivity at work (except Friday afternoons!) and in the home.

There are other benefits (they add humidity; improve learning etc.) so if you are interested, here is a short list of indoor plants you might want to add to your home or office.

  • Snake plant – easy to care for and is great at purifying the air according to NASA.
  • Devil’s ivy or Pathos – does well in low light and is nearly impossible to kill!
  • Spider plant – has a high tolerance for neglect and enjoys indirect sunlight.
Consider indoor plants as a simple way to bring nature into your home of office – there are real benefits.
