The Magic of Felting

Felting is an ancient craft that uses moisture, heat, and pressure to transform wool fibres into a dense, weather-resistant material. For centuries, felt’s unique qualities have made it a popular choice for a variety of purposes including clothing, blankets, and insulation. In this program, students practise artistic expression by creating a felted piece of their own. From snakes to vessels, students will leave with a felted keepsake, a new skill, and a fresh appreciation for the tactile beauty of natural wool.

Felt Projects are age-related and, as a result, may include any of the following:

• 2-Dimensional Felt “Paintings”
• Felted Snakes
• Finger Puppets
• Small Felt Vessels

Post Visit Activities: (if applicable)

Elementary Students: Invite students to create a puppet show starring their newly created felted snakes.
Elementary Students: Challenge students to design and/or create a habitat for their felted snake. What would your snake eat, where would it live, how would it shelter, and does it have any special adaptations (e.g. Does it camouflage? Can it breathe underwater? Does it fly? Can it climb or jump? Does it hunt?)
