No, we don’t mean Klingons ala Star Trek, we mean cling-ons, those seeds, such as burdock seeds, that attach themselves to fur, feathers and even socks. The seeds are carried to a new home via this distribution system, a very clever and successful survival method.
Executive Director, Jacob Rodenburg, suggests you try this experiment – go on a sock walk!
Place an old sock over one shoe and walk through the long grass of a field. Examine your sock. How many hitchhikers are there? Use a magnifying glass and study how the seed was able to stick to your sock. It’s a great lesson in the tremendous ingenuity of seeds as they find new places to grow.
