Shhhh…..! Our Capital Campaign is in its ‘Quiet Phase’… But We Still Want to Tell You About It!

Branching Out for a Sustainable Future is campaign about leadership and growth. We want to inspire the next generation of environmental stewards and leaders and that is why we are investing in upgrades to our facilities, showcasing what is possible in sustainable design. From using innovative alternative energy and waste management systems to incorporating natural materials – we share how zero buildings can be designed (zero carbon, zero waste, zero toxins).

At the same time, Camp Kawartha is bursting at the seams. A modest increase in capacity will help us deliver our mission of fostering stewardship to more children, students and adults than ever.

The plan is to secure a little more than $3 million to make several upgrades to our systems, our layout, and our buildings which will help grow our capacity. Our upgrade plans include:

  • The removal of the old dining hall and kitchen (built in the 1960’s they are poorly insulated and not designed to be occupied for four seasons) will allow for new facilities showcasing innovative green architecture. This can include straw bale construction, rainwater collection features, and geothermal heating and cooling. Stayed tuned for more information about the sustainable features in this building. Combined with this will be the addition of a small residence for overnight accommodations and the integration of the Health Centre, all of which will be accessible to those with limited mobility.
  • The redevelopment of our 30-year old waste management system utilizing the latest green technologies, with the possibility of including a wetland treatment system, will make us more efficient. The current system, because of its size, restricts the number of people we can host at any one time. The new system will increase our ability to deliver our mission to a wider audience.
  • Removal of the parking lot to a location nearer the road will allow for the creation of a large organic food garden and to re-green a central portion of the Camp. This reclaimed green space and garden will not only supply the kitchen with fresh produce, but will also serve as a teaching tool helping guests to understand the importance of healthy, local food.
  • The relocation of Maintenance Department to a less intrusive space will allow us to re-purpose that site for the delivery of our award-winning programming, and limit the amount of traffic moving through this central location.

As part of the ‘quiet phase,’ we are finalizing designs and are seeking partnerships with major donors.

The Campaign is expected to last from one to two years.
