Camp Kawartha’s Pathway to Stewardship and Kinship Receives Prestigious United Nations University Award

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
December 2nd, 2025 – Peterborough, Ontario

Camp Kawartha, in partnership with the Regional Centre of Expertise (RCE) Peterborough Kawartha
Haliburton, is proud to announce that the Pathway to Stewardship and Kinship has received an Outstanding
Flagship Project Award from the United Nations University Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability.
This international honour recognizes the Pathway as one of the world’s leading examples of Education for
Sustainable Development in action.

The Pathway was selected for its innovative, community grounded approach to raising environmentally aware,
caring, and engaged young people. Through 30 age linked Landmarks, the Pathway offers simple,
developmentally appropriate experiences from early childhood through the end of high school. These hands-on
activities help children and youth build lasting connections to nature, community, and place while nurturing a
sense of responsibility and hope for the future. The approach is further supported by the newly published book
The Wild Path Home from New Society Publishers and an award-winning documentary of the same name.

As part of the United Nations University’s global network of flagship projects, the Pathway now stands
alongside leading community driven sustainability initiatives from around the world. Its success highlights what
is possible when educators, school boards, Indigenous advisors, families, environmental organizations, and
local governments work together toward a shared vision of stewardship and kinship with the land. “This
recognition affirms the power of community,” said Jacob Rodenburg, Executive Director of Camp Kawartha.
“The Pathway shows what can happen when we intentionally support children at every age to care for the
world they are inheriting.”

The Outstanding Flagship Project Award elevates the Pathway to the global stage, opening new opportunities
for partnerships, knowledge exchange, and collaboration. As a recognized international model for child centred
sustainability education, the Pathway is now inspiring school boards, community groups, and non-governmental organizations to adopt approaches that are grounded in care, connection, and meaningful
action.
