Post-Visit “Signs of the Seasons”

Post-Visit “Signs of the Seasons”

Seasonal transportation movement (this could be a full activity or a body break)

  • Have the children mimic different styles of transportation depending on the season (ex: swimming in summer or skiing in winter).
  • Have them observe how the different movements make them feel. Ex: is it funny trying to swim on land? Ski without snow? Run in the snow? Etc.
  • Ponder which transportation method do they like the most? Which is the most effective? Do you need gear?

Seasonal queries/preferences

  • Designate a corner of the room or ideally the outdoor area to each season.
  • Ask the students questions and get them to move to the corner they think the answer is. Questions like:
    • When do most animals have babies?
    • When do we see the most flowers?
    • When do we go back to school?
    • When do leaves fall?
    • When do bears hibernate? (do other animals hibernate)
    • When are the days the longest? The shortest?
    • When is it typically the hottest? Coldest? Raniest? Snowiest? Sunniest? Etc.
  • At the end ask children to move to the corner to show which season is their least favourite, and favourite.

Art project – Same object, four seasons

  • What would the same object/being look like in the four seasons (this could be done with a template of an object/being or completely freehand)
Drawing of a Tree/building/child/bear/flower/etc. IN WINTER Drawing of a Tree/building/child/bear/flower/etc. IN SUMMER
Drawing of a Tree/building/child/bear/flower/etc. IN SPRING Drawing of a Tree/building/child/bear/flower/etc. IN FALL

Seasonal Observation

  • Find a bush/tree/plant/bird nest/etc. to observe with your students over the course of the year.
  • Notice/describe/draw weather changes in relation to this object/being
  • Have the students sit with this being and be present with it.
  • Does our responsibility to this being/object and the wider environment change with the season?
