We thought a Spotlight on our Summer Camp and Environment Centre Registrar, James, would be timely with the launch of Summer Camp 2019 Registration!
Question: How long have you worked at Camp Kawartha?
James: I’ve been at the camp since the summer of 2017
Q: What do you do at Camp Kawartha?
J: I have many duties at the camp but primarily I am responsible for the administration and management of summer camp registrations both at our main facility in Douro-Dummer and our Environment Centre in Peterborough. Throughout the year I am also the receptionist for our main office and manage all of the bookings for our Environment Centre. It’s a busy job but very satisfying. I have also recently started dabbling in photography on the camp’s behalf.
Q: What’s your favourite part of your job?
J: I think my favourite part of the job is the fact that I am constantly surrounded by nature and directly contributing towards the act of getting children more involved with the great outdoors.
Q: What were your favourite experiences in nature as a child?
J: As I child my favourite experiences involving nature almost always involved either mountains or the ocean. Growing up in the UK I was never far from the ocean and we would always go on holiday in the Scottish Highlands where we were surround by beautiful Lochs and endless mountains. I became quite an expert at spotting Golden Eagles as we drove through the mountains which was quite a feat at the time as there were only about a dozen breeding pairs left in Scotland back then.
Q: Where is the most interesting place you’ve visited?
J: I think Loch Ness in Scotland is probably the most interesting place I have ever visited. Aside from being a beautiful location it has a genuine air of mystery about it that can’t help but grab your attention. You find yourself scrutinizing every ripple of water in the hope that it reveals something wondrous or peering in to morning mists wondering what it might conceal. I try to go back as often as I can and I love it so much that I even flew my wife there to propose!
Q: What do you love about Fall?
J: I think I love the colours the most, It’s almost as if the world places an antique filter over the outdoors. I love getting outside this time of year to take as many photos as I can and I am always so sad that it passes so quickly.
Q: What is something you do every day?
J: Tea. I cannot get through a day without at least one good cup of tea. I have long supported the theory that everything is better with a cup of tea and it hasn’t let me down yet.
Q: What skill would you like to master?
J: I would like to become more proficient in my photography. I like to think that I am pretty good for an amateur but I would love to able to better capture the beauty of nature more effectively.
Q: What would you rate 10/10?
J: I would like to give hot, fresh bread a solid 11. Its good with everything, warms you up and rarely fails to make you smile. That would definitely be one of my highest rated things!
