Summer Camp Director

I’m entering my 43rd summer at overnight camp (8 years as a camper, 35 years as staff; 19 years at Camp Kawartha and 17 years as Summer Camp Director). It all started back in August 1979, where on the first night, the staff took our unit of 9-10 year olds down to the rapids just outside of camp and led us to a clearing to form a circle. Song books were handed out from person-to-person followed by a sing-a-long to songs like “Michael Rode The Boat Ashore,” and “John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt.” There were no cell phones, let alone VCRs back then, but it was a magical moment for me and the start of a camp journey that continues to this day.

I was born and raised in Toronto and and have been everywhere and back since then. I’m currently back in the GTA with my loving family. Camp Kawartha is my summer residence and I’m looking forward to getting back there this summer with all the benefit the summer camp experience provides.

During the school year, I am teacher and have been teaching for over 20 years.

My goal each summer is to provide life-enhancing experiences for both campers and staff. Summer camp is both a privilege and a rite that teaches campers to gain independence and gives them a safe space to grow both physically and emotionally. Camp Kawartha is a special and unique place with low campers to staff ratios and a team of experienced staff including summer staff, health care providers, administrators, food, maintenance and cleaning services staff with years of experience at Camp Kawartha – a team that not only knows the camp, but embody its values and mission. To all of us, Camp Kawartha is a home and our staff, campers and parents, our family.

I know missing out on last summer was tough on all of us and I am so excited for our return in Summer 2021. It’s our opportunity to grow, learn, see old friends, meet new ones and create new memories to add to the wonderful collage that has come before.
