Wilderness Leader in Training (WLIT)
July 30 - August 25
Ages: 16-17, co-ed.
Working at a summer camp is a demanding job and it requires one to know their physical, mental and emotional needs. WLITs will be subjected to a challenging environment that will accelerate these important personal learnings. They will become better leaders, work better with their peers and demonstrate positive role modelling to our younger campers. They will learn how to set and achieve personal and group goals. Within this four-week leadership program, participants enhance their knowledge of group dynamics, safety management, communication, decision-making, camper and self-evaluation, counseling and instructing. Led by the WLIT Director, candidates are supported, nurtured and motivated by experienced staff through workshops, programming and regular feedback culminating in a formal evaluation at the end of the session. This is the final stage of development for future leaders and staff members and the pinnacle of a camper experience.
A Typical WLIT Schedule
The session is divided into three sections: leadership development, cabin shadowing and the canoe trip. In addition, there are recreational opportunities that facilitate group bonding within and outside the leadership group. Finally, LITs are invited back to camp, after the conclusion of their program during our final 4-day session at the end of August to volunteer as counselors.
The WLIT Director and guest leaders will guide the participants through workshops and activities designed to promote teamwork, counseling and programming skills and leadership abilities.

Each participant is assigned to a cabin and shadows that cabin’s counsellor. This gives participants the opportunity to use their new leadership skills. Throughout the shadowing section the participants will be given increased responsibilities in the cabin, but always supervised by the staff counsellor.
During this time, the WLITs also shadow and lead classes. They choose three activities they are comfortable teaching and first watch staff deliver the program, and eventually lead a class in each of their chosen activity.
In the evenings the WLIT group gathers to discuss problems, success and review their goals. During this section the WLIT group will be responsible for planning, preparing and executing their own theme-day afternoon and an evening program.
The WLIT group will plan, pack and prepare for its own nine-day canoe trip. During the trip the participants take turns leading the group. Canoe tripping is an important part of Camp Kawartha and is intended to bring the participants a closer appreciation of the natural world. The trip provides an excellent opportunity for group development and will be tailored to suit the needs and interests of the group.

Throughout the four weeks a variety of recreation activities are organized. In addition to these activities involving the group, they may also integrate other leadership groups or involve the whole camp. These activities are meant to maintain balance within the program and the spirit of the group.
Those who complete the program successfully will be offered an opportunity to volunteer during session N which will further their skills as a cabin counselor. Volunteers will be given 80 hours of community service for their work over the 4-day program
Candidates are carefully selected for this program. Applicants must have successfully completed our CSD/W-CSD, Wilderness Canoe Trip or Challenge and Adventure program or demonstrate equivalent experience/qualifications in their application. Our W-LITs are selected based upon their past camp experience, leadership potential, and present involvement with children.
Campers must apply for acceptance into this program by completing a leadership application. The Leadership Application Form must be returned to our camp office by the end of October (see important dates on back of form). All applicants will be called with the results in early November. Once applicants are accepted into the program, they must complete a Registration Form and place a deposit to guarantee a place in the program.
