Wilderness Counsellor Skills Development (WCSD)
July 29 - August 24
Ages: 15-16, co-ed.
The W-CSD program is a separate, alternative program that will run concurrently with our regular Counsellor Skills Development program in August. The W-CSD program will focus more intensively on skills in an out-trip context. Participants who successfully complete the program will have an equal opportunity to apply for LIT or W-LIT the following summer.
This program is open to all candidates, but is recommended for those who have achieved their Bronze Cross and offers a more intense wilderness experience. The program includes ORCA Tripping Level 1 certification within the framework of a 3-day trip as well as a 7-day canoe trip to hone and apply these skills. In addition, candidates are offered certification in Standard First Aid. The program is designed to build confidence and motivate the participants in gaining the hard skills and discipline needed to become effective leaders and future staff members. Participants will also experience the group dynamics needed for achieving common goals and model staff roles within a camp environment. Time will also be made for recreational and coordinated programming with other leadership programs.
The program will run for one 4-week session in August. Those interested must go through the leadership application process, which includes filling out the application, answering specific questions, and returning the application by the deadline. A special packing list will be sent to accepted applicants before they come to camp with a number of required items that may need to be purchased before coming to camp.
The W-CSD program is an important first step towards future leadership and application towards the LIT programs.
Applicants must be 15-16 years old. Previous camp experience will benefit applicants.
To help gain valuable skills and tripping experiences prior to taking the WCSD program, campers should consider completing our 3-week Pre-Leadership Camp (for ages 13-14), or one of our tripping sessions including Wilderness Canoe Trip and Challenge and Adventure (for ages 14-16).
Campers must apply for acceptance into this program by completing a leadership application. The Leadership Application Form must be returned to our camp office by the end of October (see important dates on back of form). All applicants will be called with the results in early November. Once applicants are accepted into the program, they must complete a Registration Form and place a deposit to guarantee a place in the program.
