Counsellor Skills Development (CSD1)

June 29 - July 25

Ages: 15-16, co-ed.

CSDs CanoeingThis program is designed to build confidence and motivate the participants in gaining the hard skills and discipline needed to become effective camp counsellors. This is accomplished by offering Bronze Medallion or Bronze Cross certification, Emergency First Aid certification, and training in our skill building activities including sailing, windsurfing, kayaking, eco-skills, archery, initiatives, ropes and more. Participants will also experience the group dynamics needed for achieving common goals and model staff roles within a camp environment. Time will also be made for recreational and coordinated programming with other leadership programs. In addition, the group will enhance their tripping skills and participate in an extended canoe trip.

The CSD program is an important first step towards future leadership and application toward the LIT program.

Trip Section

The CSD group will plan, pack and prepare for its own five-day canoe trip. Canoe tripping is an important part of Camp Kawartha and is intended to bring the participants a closer appreciation of the natural world. In addition, the trip provides an excellent opportunity for group development.

The following activities occur during the trip section:

• Map and Compass skills
• Planning the menu
• Canoe over canoe rescue
• Paddling techniques
• Packing food and gear
• Cooking stove use and safety
• 5 days of paddling and portaging
• Unpacking and Cleaning
• Debrief

Applicants must be 15-16 years old. Previous camp experience will benefit applicants.

To help gain valuable skills and experiences prior to taking the CSD program, campers should consider completing our 3-week Pre-Leadership Camp (for age 13-14), or one of our tripping sessions including Wilderness Canoe Trip and Challenge and Adventure (for ages 14-16).

Application Process

Campers must apply for acceptance into this program by completing a leadership application. The Leadership Application Form must be returned to our camp office by the end of October (see important dates on back of form). All applicants will be called with the results in early November. Once applicants are accepted into the program, they must complete a Registration Form and place a deposit to guarantee a place in the program.
