Born and raised on a dairy farm, Ralph learned the business of looking after the herd and the land as young person. The business was not for him so he went on to qualify as a teacher. Ralph worked in the Toronto district for thirty five years in a variety of positions including, classroom teacher in elementary and secondary schools, special teacher for the gifted, acted as general consultant for teachers and ended his career as the Director of the Forest Valley Outdoor Education Centre.

During his professional career, Ralph was involved in several organizations including: president of the Council of Special Education District 413, President of the Council of Outdoor Educators of Ontario, President of the Consultants association for North York, and was involved teaching at three universities. Ralph and two colleagues founded the first international conference on environmental education whereby delegates from forty countries attended.

Throughout the years, Ralph often appeared as a spokesperson on panels and television events related to issues involving the environment. In addition, he is also an artist working several media including drawing, painting, wood and stone sculpture.

In the early 1990’s Ralph established a corporation dedicated to assisting organizations establish environmental education programs.
